All boats must be licensed by Essex Waterways Limited, and unless exempt must be covered by at least Third Party insurance and a valid Boat Safety Certificate. Maximum practical dimensions are: Length 17.85m; width 4.62m, draft .62m (statutory minimum, though much of the waterway is deeper); air draft 1.9m (lowest bridge at Paper Mill). Actual lock dimensions are approximately 18.46m x 4.92m.
