Protest against DEFRA cuts to British Waterways budget
Despite the pouring rain, a large turnout to this 3 hour event showed the depth of feeling against the cuts to British Waterways budget.
Continuing the series of protests designed to highlight the need for DEFRA to reverse their decision.
This jointly organised event was intended to bring to the attention of all theparties involved the fact that canals and other waterways are not just for boaters. The event brought together walkers, anglers, cyclists and many other user groups to illustrate the serious impact that lack of funds will have on this national asset.
Children were encouraged to take part in 'Wild over Waterays' activities and successful participants were rewarded with goodie bags.
Local MP, Michael Fabricant, attended the event to show his support and discussed the impact of these cuts with Eric Wood, President, and Bob Williams, Treasurer, of Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust; Margaret Beardsmore, Chairman of IWA Lichfield Branch and Vaughan Welch, Chairman of IWA Birmingham Branch and IWA National Restoration Committee.
