The Judges
Welsh Assembly Member Karen Sinclair and Martin Jones MP judging the best decorated life rings.
Life Ring Race or Pooh Sticks with a Purpose!!
Who needs enemies with Friends like these!
The Friends of the Montgomery Canal were the clear winners, taking the first three places in the final of the Life Ring Race held adjacent to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on Saturday 3rd March.
The event, which was part of the campaign against the cuts to British Waterways' budget by DEFRA, was supported by Welsh Assembly Member Karen Sinclair, Martin Jones MP and Councillor Pat Jeffares. Prizes were donated by Cadbury and Air Products. The serious campaign behind the day of fun was explained to the many visitors who were invited to sign a petition.
Twelve rings were entered in the race by various organisations for example The Friends of the Montgomery Canal, The Railway & Canal Historical Society, Anglo Welsh and Ty Mawr Country Park. The rings were dropped with a splash, in true pooh sticks style from Bridge 32 raced down the Llangollen Canal with the flow and finished at Bridge 31 which is at the entrance to Trevor Basin.
The best decorated ring was won by Jack Jellicoe, an apprentice for Anglo Welsh who designed and welded a model of the aqueduct which he called ‘Tony Telford’. Unfortunately the ring was so heavy it turned upside down when dropped from the bridge but was rescued in time to continue the race! The best under 16 entry was won jointly by two different teams of Rangers from the Ty Mawr Country Park.
