'Missing' boat tripper given bail

A 52-year-old man, reported missing while on a canal holiday in Cheshire, has appeared in court at Crewe charged with stealing the narrow boat he hired.

David King, of Kingsmead in St Albans, is accused of failing to return the 47ft (14.3m) craft to Middlewich Narrow Boats on the agreed date of 23 March.

He was arrested on the Oxford Canal near Banbury last Friday.

Mr King is charged with stealing a conveyance and was freed on bail at South Cheshire Magistrates' Court.

A prosecution solicitor asked for more time to prepare a case and recommended it should go to crown court because the case was very unusual and the value of the canal boat was so large.

Mr King with appear before the magistrates again on 25 June.
