IWA Press Release

IWA in Talks with BW over Licence Fees and Moorings Auction Trial

Following the recent presentation of the Inland Waterways Association’s (IWA) online petition against the imposition of British Waterways’ moorings tender trial, British Waterways invited IWA to meet with them this week to more fully understand the strength of feeling and the wider concerns of IWA’s members.

Over the course of a one and a half hour meeting with Simon Salem of BW, a broad range of topics was covered, during which IWA outlined at length its members’ views over the moorings tender trial and restated its concerns at British Waterways’ proposals for licence fee increases.

Speaking of the meeting, Dr Roger Squires, chairman of IWA’s navigation committee said:

“It was a very constructive and at times lively discussion, both of us have differing but innovative thoughts on the subject matter, however, we are pleased that BW is willing to share a dialogue with us and allow us the opportunity to restate our case in support of our position in detail.”

“We discussed the impact of BW’s proposals at length and of IWA’s concerns at the effect they might have on the waterscape as we currently know it, and for the future for boating as an affordable and socially inclusive pastime.”

He continued:

“ I was reassured that BW does take our concerns seriously, and I was pleased to be able to table a list of ideas for them to consider further, regarding moorings, licences and enforcement policy. I look forward to a further, continuing and constructive dialogue with them.”

Notes for Editors

The Inland Waterways Association

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) is a registered charity, founded in 1946, which advocates the conservation, use, maintenance, restoration and development of the inland waterways for public benefit.

IWA has about 18,000 members whose interests include boating, towing path walking, industrial archaeology, nature conservation and many other activities associated with the inland waterways.  Information provided by 188 corporate members with their own membership structures has revealed that they, in themselves, have a combined membership of at least 59,500 in support of IWA's voice.

IWA works closely with navigation authorities, other waterway bodies, a wide range of national and local authorities, voluntary, private and public sector organisations to raise funds, lobby for support and encourage public participation in the inland waterways.

More than 500 miles of canals and navigable rivers have been re-opened to public use since the Association was founded in 1946.  Currently another 500 miles of derelict inland waterways are the subject of restoration plans.
