In 1947 there were objections to the proposed abandonment of the Derby and Barnsley Canals. IWA supported a group objecting to the closure of the canal that included the Derbyshire County Council, the Derby Corporation, the Derby Chamber of Commerce, The River Trent Catchment Board, the Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Electric Power Company, Messrs. Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., and Messrs. Midland Tar Distillers Ltd.
A 1961 protest cruise went to the padlocked entrance of the Derby Canal and was followed by a meeting in Derby. Local press coverage and correspondence from this attracted much support.
The abandonment of the Derby Canal was authorised by the Ministry of transport in 1964.
In 1993 with the aid of a grant from Southern Derbyshire Training and Enterprise Council, the Derby & Sandiacre Canal Company was formed, shortly followed by the founding of the Derby & Sandiacre Canal Society. The Derby & Sandiacre Canal Company was then registered as a charity and amended its title to The Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust
In 2004 the Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust launched a ten-year fundraising and development strategy for the Derby Canal with support from local and national organisations.
