Mr. Robert Carter, the former owner, in July 1963 offered the canal at auction in Hull. Bidding began at £500. The canal was bought for £1,950 by Mr. Frank Hopkinson of Conisborough, a motor dealer, who, at the time of the purchase, had never seen it. He told the press that he went to the sale 'as an afterthought', and bought the canal 'as a speculation'. Mr. Hopkinson has since joined our Association. 'I shall let someone run it for me. Perhaps my son will take an interest in it.'
