Support Us
There are many ways in which you can support IWA , through becoming a member, giving your time as a volunteer, making a donation or leaving a legacy.
Tax-efficient ways of giving
We welcome any membership subscription , or any gift large or small, as we are totally reliant on the generosity of waterways supporters for our funding.
The main ways of making donations in a tax-efficient manner are as follows:
Income Tax/Gift Aid
If you are a UK tax-payer, by using the Gift Aid scheme, IWA can reclaim £282 from the Inland Revenue for every £1,000 you donate.
We reclaim the tax by forwarding details of your gift to the Inland Revenue. If you are a higher-rate taxpayer, you yourself can also reclaim £231 on every £1,000 you donate (assuming a basic rate of tax of 22%, and a higher rate of 40%). Simply enter the details on your tax return.
For example:
Single Gift Net cost to Donor Gross value to IWA
£1,000 £769 £1,282
£3,900 £3,000 £5,000
£23,400 £18,000 £30,000
Multiple Gifts
Gift Frequency Duration Net Cost Value to IWA
£10.86 per month 3 years £300 £500
Companies
Companies which make donations to charity can reduce their liability for Corporation Tax through the use of the Gift Aid scheme.
Legacies
All bequests to IWA are exempt from Inheritance Tax (40% at April 2004). In April 2006 the threshold for Inheritance Tax was increased by 4% to £285,000. The government has scheduled further small increases in the threshold up to £325,000 by 2009/10. We are most grateful to donors who make provision in their Will in favour of IWA and they may count on the same recognition and gratitude as other benefactors.
Stocks and Shares
Individuals can obtain a double-form of tax relief by donating gifts of shares and securities to IWA: the value of the gift can be offset against any income tax liability and in addition the gift would be exempt from any liability for capital gains tax.
For a higher-rate taxpayer who donates £10,000 worth of shares, this will mean a reduction of £4,000 in his Income Tax liability, as well as avoiding any Capital Gains Tax liability, a further saving of £4,000. This means that shares can be given at a much reduced cost and there may be even a net cash flow gain, if the Income Tax relief is worth more than the shares cost in the first place. Please consult our Finance manager for more information.
Tax refund gifts
If you are a UK taxpayer and complete a Self-Assessment tax form, you can use the form to donate to IWA all or part of any refund due to you. To do this, use the code GA K5 6T G when completing your Self-Assessment gift aid reclamation form (SA 100 charity). You can also choose to make your refund a Gift Aid donation.
Gifts from Overseas
Donors who are resident in the United States can qualify for an income tax deduction on gifts made to IWA. Please contact our Finance manager for more information on donating to IWA.
If you are a US taxpayer, your donation qualifies under Section 501(c) 3.
There are many ways that you can support the work of The Inland Waterways Association, and in turn contribute to safeguarding Britain's inland waterways.
