Through its connection with the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Leeds, this canal is part of the North Sea to Irish Sea route from the Humber to the Mersey. It has 17 locks and runs for 41.5 miles or 66.4km.

Historical Information
In the late 1600s, the river navigation carried coal and cloth. Despite competition from railways and roads, the waterway was improved to carry larger tonnages and it is still an active commercial waterway toady, carrying coal, oil, gravel and sand.
