The canal forms part of the Cheshire Ring and passes mainly through an industrial estate. It goes from Ducie Street in Manchester, where it connects to the Rochdale Canal, to Ashton under Lyne, where it connects wit the Peak Forest Canal and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

The canal comprises of 18 locks and runs for 6.25 miles or 10.05km.

Historical Information

The canal was built in 1792 to serve the textile mills of Ashton and the surrounding coalfields.  Following a major restoration scheme, it reopened in 1974.
