Historical Information
The Birmingham Canal was completed in 1772 to bring coal into the city. This contour canal wound its way from the Staffordshire and Worcestershire to Gas Street Basin. While it passed close to many manufacturers, the slowness was a disadvantage. As trade grew, improvements were made, another canal from Birmingham to Fazeley was built and in 1794 the Birmingham Canal Navigation was created. The canals in this area were closely linked with the industry and so remained in use until after the Second World War.
