Historical Information
The Birmingham Canal was completed in 1772 to bring coal into the city. The original line of this canal wound its way from the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal to Gas Street Basin, but while it passed close to many manufacturers, the slowness of the contour route was a disadvantage. As trade grew, ia new main line was constructed that cut off most of the bends. The canals in this area were closely linked with the industry and remained in commercial use until after the Second World War.
