The canal runs from the main line of the Birmingham Canal Navigations at Farmers Bridge to Fazeley via Aston Junction, where the Digbeth Branch leaves to join the Grand Union at Bordesley Junction. The canal links with the Coventry Canal at Fazeley Junction. There are 38 locks along the main line, and 6 locks on the 1 mile Digbeth Branch. The distance from Farmers Bridge to Fazeley is 15 miles, but the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal’s promoters also built 5½ miles of the Coventry Canal between Fazeley and Whittington Brook.

Historical Information
During the 1780s, there was considerable competition to gain parliamentary approval to build the canal between Birmingham and the Coventry Canal, then under construction, at Fazeley. This was eventually achieved by the Birmingham Canal Company, which promptly took over its rival promoter to form the Birmingham and Birmingham & Fazeley Canal Company – renamed in 1794 as the Birmingham Canal Navigations Company. The company also built the Coventry Canal between Fazeley and Whittington Brook owing to the former’s difficulties in completing its line.
