Erewash Canal Preservation and Development Association restored the very southern end of the canal, including the re-opening of Langley Mill Lock in 1973.  In 2002, the Friends of the Cromford Canal was formed and announced its intentions to reopen the canal, including Pinxton Branch and the 3063-yard Butterley Tunnel.  450 members joined the new society within its first few months.  Work has now started to extend the canal northwards from Langley Mill, by about half a mile, which would include a new marina, and WRG undertook clearance works further north over the last three years.
