(Line of intended new canal in various ownerships)

Daventry District Council is promoting the construction of a £11.7 million new canal from near the town centre to the Grand Union Canal, just east of Braunston Tunnel, passing alongside Daventry Reservoir.  Although only just over a mile away from the canal at its closest point, Daventry completely misses out on the benefits of the busy waterway and the Council sees the new canal as a potential catalyst for potential regeneration in Daventry town centre and for raising the town’s profile as a tourist destination.  A funding application to the Big Lottery Fund in 2006 failed to get through to the final stages, but the Council is exploring other funding options and may press on with the construction of a marina as part of a property development in Daventry itself before connecting to the Canal’s main line.
