(Canal in various ownerships)

Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust plans to restore the Canal via a new connection from the Trent & Mersey at Swarkestone along the original line to Wilmorton.  A new route across Pride Park and the Wyvern has been protected in the City of Derby Local Plan.  The new route incorporates a recently built culvert under the Wilmorton College access road and will include an aqueduct over the Derbyshire Derwent.  The Canal will then follow its original route and at its original level.  60% of the route is in local authority ownership and allocated to be transferred to the Trust when restoration funding is available.  In addition, the Trust purchased a further 5 km of the Canal and negotiations continue to purchase the remainder.  In conjunction with the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society, two bridges have been restored and work continues to complete the restoration of Borrowash Bottom Lock.
