(Line of canal in various ownerships, including Devon County Council)

Originally envisaged as a grand scheme to connect Bristol and Exeter, only the section between Tiverton and Taunton was built - part as a broad canal and partly as tub boat canal.  The western part, owned and operated by Devon County Council as a country park, is navigable and used as a local amenity.  The eastern (tub boat) part is derelict, but an overview study has been carried out, which favourably views the possibility of re-instating this section to navigation.  Grand Western Canal Trust continues with conservation and clearance work to preserve structures on the tub boat canal and support the Council.
