www.britishwaterways.co.uk The Kennet and Avon comprises a canalised section of the River Kennet from Reading to Newbury, a canalised section of the River Avon from Bath to Bristol and an entirely new section of canal linking Newbury and Bath.

The Reading to Bath section covers 75 miles (120.7km) with 100 locks, whereas the Bath to Hanham section is only 11.25 miles long (18.1km) and comprises of only 6 locks.

Historical Information

The canal was closed to through traffic in 1951 despite the, then, newly formed IWA identifying it as being at risk. Following forty years of campaigning and voluntary restoration work, it was reopened by the Queen in 1990.
