The canal runs from Tewitfield to Preston , passing through Carniforth and Lancaster over 42.5 miles (68.4km), and connects with the Ribble Link. The Lancaster canal has no locks.

The Glasson branch however, has 7 locks over its 3 mile (4.8km) length.

Historical Information

The canal was built to link Manchester, Preston and Lancaster but the short stretch connecting Preston and Chorley was never finished. The canal remained separated from the main network until Britain’s newest waterway, the Millennium Ribble Link, was opened in 2002.
