Great Ouse Boating Association, IWA’s Cambridge Branch, East Anglian Waterways Association and other partners have embarked on a joint project to look into the possibilities of extending navigation of the Little Ouse from its current head of navigation at Brandon town centre to Thetford.  Small craft can already reach Santon Downham, 2¾ miles upstream from Brandon Lock.  A study by consultants in 2003, co-ordinated by EA, into the feasibility of restoring the river from Brandon to Thetford has indicated that four new locks would be needed.
