The Montgomery Canal runs for 35 miles from Frankton Junction near Ellesmere in Shropshire, to Newtown.  Formerly part of the Shropshire Union Canal network, it was abandoned after a breach in 1936.  Restoration started more than thirty years ago and has received considerable support and assistance from IWA with volunteers from WRG and Shropshire Union Canal Society restoring many structures, including the locks at Frankton, Aston, Carreghofa, Burgeddin, Brynderwen and Newhouse – due to be completed in 2006.  The canal is open to navigation on an isolated 11 miles section from Berriew, through Welshpool, to Ardleen and for 6 miles from Maesbury to the junction with the Llangollen Canal at Frankton Junction.  This is to be extended with £1.1 million funding from a Heritage Lottery Fund Grant, European and BW funds and grants from Shropshire Union Canal Society and IWA announced in January 2006.  Restoration is promoted by a partnership led by BW, and including the local authorities, heritage and wildlife groups, Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust, IWA and Shropshire Union Canal Society.  The Restoration Trust also has a subsidiary Friends of the Montgomery Canal to promote support amongst people along the line of the canal.
