(Former river navigation, largely under control of the EA)

The Sussex Ouse Restoration Trust was formed during 2001 with the aims of conserving the ancient structures associated with the river’s history, restoring navigation to the river above Lewes, protecting the river’s wildlife and improving opportunities for educational and leisure use of the river.  Some excavation work has been started at Isfield Lock, near Uckfield, with support from WRG.  The Trust’s longer-term proposals include construction of a tidal barrier downstream of Lewes, to reduce flooding in the town and make the river navigable at all states of the tide.
