The aims of Thames & Medway Canal Association are directed more towards maintenance of the remains of the Thames & Medway Canal in an attractive order for local visitors, rather than full restoration of the canal, since a full through route would require use of Higham Tunnel, currently used by a regular train service.  Proposals for redevelopment at the canal’s basin and Thames entrance at Gravesend seem likely bring about restoration at this end of the canal, following discussions held by the Association and IWA with property developers and Gravesham Council.  In 2004, Atkins consultants produced a report, financed by IWA, the Council and others, to demonstrate the redevelopment potential.
