The first lock on the Uttoxeter Canal, and its link to the Caldon Canal, was reopened in July 2005. The project cost £800,000 - funded by BW, the European Union European Regional Development Fund, Advantage West Midlands, Rural Regeneration in North East Staffordshire and a substantial IWA grant from a legacy. The Caldon & Uttoxeter Canals Trust, WRG and IWA’s Stoke-on-Trent Branch undertook restoration work, and Staffordshire County Council and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council provided further support. Both the lock and basin form a part of the Uttoxeter Canal that fell into disrepair in the 1930s after it stopped being used. It was the last part of the canal to be closed, the majority having been swallowed up by a now derelict railway in the nineteenth century. The Trust extended its constitution and changed its name in 2004, so that it can help protect the line of the derelict Uttoxeter Canal as it continues through the Churnet Valley and past Alton Towers.
