trailboats with bunting cruising along the canal

IWA Trailboat Festival South will be hosted by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust on the summit of the Wey & Arun Canal to raise the profile of the Canal and its restoration.

The event will take place on the spot where the Wey & Arun Junction Canal was officially opened on the 28th September 1816 by the 3rd Earl of Egremont.

The Summit Level has been a focus for the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s restoration plans and has seen major renovation in recent years, including the construction of Compasses Bridge and the Thriscutt Slipway, built by Trust volunteers and opened last year.

A full programme of activities for all ages will include live music, food stalls, demonstrations and competitions. There will be an award ceremony at the Trailboat Festival, as well as an illuminated boat parade.

Canoes, paddleboarders and kayakers are invited to join a special rally from 1pm on Monday 3rd May.

See the Wey & Arun Canal Trust website for more information.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
