Mike Palmer has been a driving force within IWA's Waterway Recovery Group (WRG) for nearly 30 years, starting as a teenager and now in his role as a Director and Chair of WRG since 1996. His main aim and desire is for WRG to continue to be the national co-ordinating body for voluntary labour on the inland waterways of the British Isles and promote best practice in volunteer restoration of canals.
Mike has actively encouraged volunteers to adopt best practice in volunteer restoration in regards to health and safety, canal restoration skills and techniques, and plant operation. He has also promoted such practices to other canal restoration groups by providing guidance on health and safety issues without creating barriers to volunteering.
Mike has a full time career with the BBC where he was heavily involved in the 2012 London Olympics coverage. He was previously a member of the Inland Waterways Advisory Council and is currently a member of CRT’s advisory panel on volunteering.
