Chairman London Region since July 2011, first elected September 2007
Waterway interests: Paul has previously been a directly elected trustee serving on the board of trustees up to 2010. He serves on Promotions Committee and represents London on Navigation Committee. He is committed to widening the membership of the association so that others recognise IWA as being a broad “church” representing not only the boating and heritage interests but all other users such as walkers and casual visitors.
Paul has been boating since the age of 11 and has owned a boat on the canals for over twenty-five years. During most of this time, his boats have been moored in the London area. Paul has been a member of the Chelmsford Branch’s committee since the mid 80’s and has held a variety of posts including a spell as chairman. His period as chairman coincided with the gathering crisis on the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation (C&BN) which eventually lead to IWA taking over responsibility for running the navigation and the formation of Essex Waterways.
Professional Qualifications and Employment: Paul joined the British Telecommunications (then the GPO) in 1965 as a trainee radio technician and became a manager in 1970 at the age of 23. He continued to work for the company in various electrical engineering and managerial positions until he took early retirement in 2000. During his time with BT he gained considerable experience in providing strategic leadership, team working and general finance. Since taking early retirement, he has run his own Limited Company and is now employed as a laboratory assistant in one of the countries top state grammar schools.
