Family fun this October half term

Looking for things to do with the kids during this October half term? There's plenty of events taking place around the waterways network to keep the whole family entertained. There's a host of Halloween themed events as well as a nostalgic 1940s weekend in Cheshire and puppet theatre aboard a barge in London. There'll be performance artists at the Lune Aqueduct in Lancashire and IWA's Wild over Waterways activities will be taking place at Cromford Wharf in Derbyshire.

  1. Halloween at Gloucester Waterways Museum - GLOUCESTERSHIRE - 26th October - 3rd November 2013
    A spooky Halloween trail around the museum. Children of all ages will enjoy making bat mobiles and witches' hats whilst youngsters can have a go at apple bobbing and challenge staff to a spot of trick or treating.   2. Halloween at Spooky Standedge - SOUTH YORKSHIRE - 26th - 31st October 2013
    Spooky goings on at Standedge Tunnel! A range of Halloween themed activities happening at Standedge throughout the half term week. Activities include a Halloween family fun day on 27th October where the site will taken over by historical figures from the tunnels past, back from the dead. Haunted Cafe, Spooky boat trips and kids activities will be available along with haunted circus skill classes and face painting. On 30th October there will be pumpkin carving for all abilities.   3. 1940s weekend at Ellesmere Port Boat Museum - CHESHIRE - 26th - 27th October 2013
    The museum is holding a family-friendly weekend of 1940s nostalgia. During the afternoons there will be tea dances and beetle drives then, on Saturday evening, the mood changes to a Victory party atmosphere of up-tempo dancing. Entertainers include Wingtip Windy, Lilli Moore and GI Jive. 1940s re-enactor groups will also be attending, including Northern Forties, Cheshire Home Front and UK Home Front. 1940’s themed food and games will be available to guests. Cost: Tickets are free for each session, but there are limited numbers so please collect your tickets in advance and period dress is encouraged. (Please be respectful – allied forces only).   4. The Hare and the Tortoise at the Puppet Theatre Barge - LONDON - 28th October - 2nd November 2013
    See this delightful children's tale brought to life by puppets in the unique Puppet Theatre Barge. These well-known fables from Aesop’s famous collection are brought to life with drama and humour. Staged with beautiful lighting and carved marionettes. The Puppet Theatre Barge, which opened in 1982, is unique. Described as “one of London’s more elusive treasures”, it is an established 55-seat theatre with all modern facilities. Rich in atmosphere, it provides the ideal setting for the magical and imaginative shows produced by this famous company.   5. Light up the waterways at the Lune Aqueduct - LANCASHIRE - 29th - 30th October 2013
    Commissioned by the Canal & River Trust, this is a free event for all the family to enjoy. Discover the stories and heritage of our waterways and their often overlooked ecology with a series of acts by aerial artists, magicians, dancers, musicians and other exciting performance artists, alongside the Grade 1 Listed Lune Aqueduct. Booking: Although this is a free event it must be booked in advance as there are limited places.   6. Dudley Canal Childrens' Halloween & Ghost Hunt - WEST MIDLANDS - 30th & 31st October 2013
    Spooky Boat Trips are taking place through Dudley’s underground caverns on 30th October. There will be light shows, family entertainment and ‘glow in the dark’ Halloween puppets. Best fancy dress costumes get prizes. Trips last 1 hour and run every 30 minutes. There is also a Ghost Hunt taking place on 31st October. You will travel deep below Dudley with mediums who will contact the spirit world in the caverns and tunnels. Booking: Places are limited, so early booking is strongly advised.   7. Halloween Masquerade and Murder Mystery Spectacular at Ellesmere Port Boat Museum - CHESHIRE - 30th - 31st October 2013
    Step into a live action murder mystery event that will take you across the museum grounds, exploring for clues, interviewing suspects and collecting goodies along the way. An event for all the family. Cost: Adults £5, Children (under 16) £2, Children must be accompanied by an adult. Booking: Due to high demand, booking in advance is essential. Times: 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm.   8. Hidden Depths Canal Cruises - LONDON - 30th & 31st October 2013
    A new trip boat company on the London canals running regular trips from Kings Cross to Camden and back. Halloween boat trip for all the family which will last approximately 45 minutes and depart from Kings Cross, going through Islington tunnel, turning at City Lock and returning through the tunnel to Kings Cross. The boat will be decorated and the boat will be steered by a dead pirate. Cost: Adults £5, children £4 (3-15 years), seniors £4 (60+). Babies from 0- 2 are free but are counted amongst the 12 persons on board even if they sit on a lap.   9. WOW Activities at Cromford Wharf - DERBYSHIRE - 2nd & 3rd November 2013
    The Friends of the Cromford Canal host the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Discover Days at Cromford. There will be Wild Over Waterways (WOW) activities, with a host of different things to try and the official opening of the Birdswood trip boat service will take place at 12 noon on Sunday 3rd November. There will be demonstrations of "Rose & Castle" painting, peg weaving, a historical slide show, watercolour paintings for sale, and a tombola.   10. Bonfire Rally 2013 - WEST MIDLANDS - 2nd November 2013
