Created on 17/12/2013

Indulged a bit too much over the festive period? Looking for a way to burn off those Christmas excesses? Then join an IWA branch on a work party or walk. Local IWA branches are hosting a range of activities that will get you out and about and over the post-Christmas slump this January. All are welcome to come and enjoy the events being held.

Wednesday 1st – Sunday 5th January
IWA Towpath Walks Society starts 2014 off with a New Years Day walk in London. Meeting at the taxi rank by King’s Cross Underground, the group are walking along the Regent’s Canal towards Camden. This is a two hour walk starting at 2pm – not too early making this a great way to spend the day after a New Year’s Eve celebration.  Can’t make this one? The group are out again on Sunday 5th January, walking the Regent’s Canal from Camden to Little Venice.

The first work party of the month is on Saturday 4th January, hosted by IWA Chester & Merseyside Branch in Chester. Volunteers will be working on the Dee Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal to prepare the area for the IWA National Campaign Festival (6th-8th June 2014). These work parties are a great work out offering something for all.

Also on Saturday 4th January, IWA Shrewsbury & North Wales Branch will be covering four canals in under four miles to blow away any New Year cobwebs, with a walk along the towpath from Nantwich to Barbridge. Meet at The Olde Barbridge Inn at 10.15am for the 10.40am Arriva 84 bus to Nantwich Marina and return to Barbridge on foot in time for lunch.

In addition to the two London walks, on Sunday 5th January there is a walk being led by IWA Warwickshire Branch. Walkers will be taken on a circular walk around Wilmcote and the Stratford Canal totalling five miles and lasting up to two and half hours. Starting at 10.30am you’ll be finished in time for a pub lunch.

Monday 6th – Sunday 12th January
IWA Warwickshire Branch offered invaluable support to their local Canal & River Trust Towpath Taskforce on the Grand Union Canal last year and will continue to do so in 2014. The branch will be out three times over January on work parties that involve painting, litter picking, vegetation management and path work. The first meeting is on Monday 6th January at Hatton followed by two work parties at Lapworth on the 16th and 18th January.

If your New Year’s resolution was to try something new, then IWA North Staffordshire & South Cheshire Branch’s work party is the one for you. On Thursday 9th January, the volunteers will be hedge planting on the Caldon Canal near Cheddleton and will be more than happy to show those new to the job just how it’s done.

The Tardebigge Lime Kiln site is revealing more and more secrets as IWA Birmingham, Black Country & Worcestershire Branch support Worcester, Birmingham & Droitwich Canals Society on their monthly work party weekends. See how the history of the site develops as the group continues to improve the area in 2014 starting on 11th and 12th January.

Monday 13th – Sunday 19th January
Want to make a difference to the local community in the New Year, join IWA North Staffordshire & South Cheshire Branch at Lock 63 on the Trent & Mersey Canal on Saturday 18th January. The volunteers are working to improve the Cheshire Locks as part of a wider project. Residents of Malkins Bank were so impressed with the work further down the flight they asked if the volunteers could prioritise the locks by their homes. The branch will continue in the Malkins Bank area until Spring time, the gratitude of the residents emphasising how work parties have a positive impact on a wide number of people.

IWA Towpath Walks Society will be continuing their journey along the Regent’s Canal, London, on the 19th January as they lead a walk from Islington to Hoxton. This is a great chance to catch up with friends and family at the start of the New Year, wrap up warm though – it’s bound to be cold!

Monday 20th – Sunday 26th January
On Tuesday 21st January, IWA Northampton Branch will be returning to begin work on the main flight of locks on the Northampton Arm of the Grand Union Canal. The branch have adopted this stretch of canal so meet monthly to maintain the area, it’s a great project to get involved with if you’re looking for something to carry on throughout the year.

The last walk of the month, Thursday 23rd January, will be along the River Dee with IWA Chester & Merseyside Branch starting in Parkgate. It’s just under four and half miles and a very sociable event. During the walk time is taken for a break where you can enjoy any refreshments you have brought and there is the option to book a pub lunch before you set off to enjoy on your return.

Finishing the month on Saturday 25th January is IWA Manchester Branch’s work party at Hyde on the Lower Peak Forest Canal. This is a monthly work party with a group committed to doing a good job as they hope to adopt the area in the future. It’s your last chance in January to work off any Christmas excesses that may still be lingering!
