Following years of campaigning, IWA North & East London Branch welcomed the reopening of the Waterworks River Path earlier this year.

The path closed in 2010 when the works for Crossrail started. The closure was subsequently extended due to construction delays, and sewage works by Thames Water.

The Waterworks River is part of network of Bow Back Rivers which link to the Lee & Stort Navigation in the East End of London.

Local residents now have an off-road, step-free link between Hackney Marshes, Leyton, the Olympic Park and Stratford for both walking and cycling. This link extends as far as Beckton using the Greenway.

The Waterworks River Path has proved to be vitally important during the Covid-19 pandemic with the restrictions on public transport services. The reopening has also created new outdoor blue-green spaces and leisure opportunities for the community.
