Voting has now closed - Results update coming soon!

IWA Chelmsford Branch, in partnership with Essex Waterways, have succeeded in getting through to the in-store voting stage of Tesco's 'Bags of Help' scheme, with a project to transform a stretch of towpath directly opposite the Maldon Extra branch.

The Tesco grant scheme is funded through the 5p bag levy that is now charged for disposable plastic bags. All money goes into local community projects and our towpath improvement project has been selected to go through to the in-store vote, meaning it will receive either £1,000, £2,000 or £5,000 - how much the project gets is decided by Tesco shoppers and that's where you can help! Every purchase made at Tesco will mean shoppers receive a token, which can be used to cast a vote. The project with the highest number of votes will receive the largest donation.

Our towpath project will appear in the following stores throughout March and April:

• Billericay Express
• Brentwood Express
• Brentwood Hanging Express
• Brentwood Warley Express
• Broomfield Rd Chelm Express
• Chelmsford
• Chelmsford Moulsham Express
• Danbury Express
• Great Baddow Express
• Interchange Chelm Express
• Maldon Extra
• Shenfield Brentwood Express
• Waterhouse Lane Express
• Witham

Our Project: Towpath Transformation on the Navigation

Resurfacing this stretch of towpath will connect two other recently improved sections and create a circular route that will link to an adjoining footpath, park and cycle route, meaning there will be better access to the navigation for all users.

The current condition of the path is very poor and it is often slippery and uneven under foot, making it unusable for anyone with a wheelchair or pushchair and often even unsuitable for walkers, runners and cyclists.

Improving this area will allow these users to access all that the Chelmer and Blackwater has to offer. The navigation is a living waterway and a great habitat for wildlife, with nature reserves in close proximity along several stretches. It is also has great heritage value and all of the canal curtilage (locks & associated buildings) are Grade II listed structures; we want everybody to be able to easily enjoy this amenity at its best.
