20th-22nd September 2019

Weekend excursion to the Shropshire Union Canal,
the Montgomery Canal and the Ironbridge Gorge Museums

LAST FEW PLACES!

Itinerary:

Friday 20th September - travel to Norbury Junction on the Shropshire Union Canal to embark on the trip boat 'Shropshire Star'. Cruise to High Onn and return with a Fish and Chip luncheon en route. There is a licensed bar plus tea and coffee on board. Peter Brown from the Shropshire Union Canal Society (SUCS) will act as our host, noting points of interest and briefing us on the current story of the Canal. There will be a short break at Norbury Junction to stretch our legs and explore the area.

Saturday 21st September - we are visiting and being hosted today on the Montgomery Canal. In the morning we visit Aston Locks and the adjacent nature reserve. Much of the Montgomery Canal is a SSSI and the nature reserves are an essential component of the restoration. Lunch is included and will be at the Queens Head. In the afternoon we visit a restored section, Redwith Bridge to Crickheath Basin. Crickheath Basin is currently being restored by contractors and will form the temporary terminus of navigation.

Our host for the day will be David Carter, SUCS Restoration Project Manager. 12:30 Arrive back at the 'Queens Head' for lunch.

Sunday 22nd September - so to Ironbridge, site of the birth of the Industrial Revolution. Our guide will be David de Haan, a former Director of the Ironbridge Museums. Starting at the Iron Bridge we will also visit the Museum of the Gorge, the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron and the Coalport China Museum and Blists Mill Victorian town where there are several restaurants
The Ironbridge complex totals 10 museums; our visit has selects four sites which it is felt are best suited to a day's exploration; however, should you wish to return for more, your tickets will be valid for a year!
