Canalway Cavalcade 2013 Event Summary - 4th - 6th May 2013
The sun and spectacle attracted thousands of visitors to London's Little Venice for The Inland Waterways Association's 30th annual Canalway Cavalcade during the May Day Bank Holiday weekend.
At the Opening Ceremony on Saturday afternoon Libby Bradshaw, Events Manager, read out a message to IWA Vice President Illtyd Harrington from HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, conveying his congratulations and best wishes to IWA members on the occasion of Cavalcade's 30th anniversary.
Councillor Angela Harvey, Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster, welcomed everybody and thanked The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) for putting on the event. Jon Guest, Waterway Manager, Canal & River Trust (London) welcomed everyone to London's Waterways. Les Etheridge, National Chairman of the IWA, described the campaigning and restoration work of the IWA nationally.
At the VIP reception on Saturday afternoon the IWA's Vivian Bulkely-Johnson Salt Award, for a firm making a significant contribution to freight by water, was presented to S Walsh & Sons of Brentwood by IWA's National Chairman, Les Etheridge.
Over 160 boats attended from all parts of the 2000 mile waterway network and the pageant, after the opening ceremony, and procession of illuminated boats on Sunday evening were the best attended in recent memory. The atmosphere amongst the crowds who came to listen to the Blue Brothers play on the island in Brownings Pool and watch the illuminated boats was electric and everyone cheered each of the 23 boats when they came through.
The awards were presented by John Edmonds, Vice President of London Region IWA, on Monday afternoon:
