The Essex 10k will be raising money for work being done by Essex Waterways Ltd to maintain the Chelmer and Blackwater for public benefit.
This year's fundraising efforts will go towards vital towpath improvements being done all along the Navigation.
Essex Waterways is a not-for-profit limited company, subsidiary of IWA, and is responsible for managing The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation in Essex. The navigation is widely used by the public for walking, canoeing, boating, fishing, and many other events and activities. Essex Waterways must keep The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation clean and free of weed, manage mooring fees and carry out necessary restoration and maintenance work to keep it in the condition needed to be fully enjoyed.
Unfortunately this is a huge, continual amount of work, not helped by unforeseen events such as flooding, and it can be very costly. While Essex Waterways receives money from various avenues such as mooring fees and boat licencing, it doesn't raise nearly enough for the organisation to carry out necessary repairs and improvements that are desperately needed.
Raising money for Essex Waterways could make a significant impact on the amount of work that can be carried out along the 14-mile navigation, benefitting the many thousands of people that use it each year and ensuring it remains open and enjoyed as a significant part of the Essex landscape.
