Saul Waterways Pageant - 23rd - 25th August

Saul Waterways Pageant took place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 23rd to Monday 25th August 2014 at the junction of the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and Stroudwater Navigation.

The event showcased a diversity of interests on and around the waterways. As well as water-based competitions and demonstrations, activities included walking, fishing and cycling as well as featuring live music, markets, refreshments and a real ale bar. Over the weekend there was a market and a Boat Jumble that took place on the Bank Holiday Monday.

One of the highlights of the event was a parade of historic RNLI lifeboats, spanning the last sixty years, brought to Saul by lifeboat enthusiast Phil Trotter of R W Davis & Sons, the well-known Saul Junction boat builders.

The lifeboats formed a convoy, leaving Sharpness on Saturday morning and arriving at Saul at about 11am, before parading past the Pageant site at Saul Junction. The Lifeboat Parade was repeated on Sunday and Monday, and the boats were displayed at the event site throughout the weekend Saturday 23rd to Monday 25th August.

Two beautiful old steam launches and a steam traction engine made an appearance on Saturday and Sunday.

Severn Area Rescue Association performed demonstrations throughout the event.

The programme of competitions included boat handling, Best Boat in Bloom, illuminated boat display, best kept engine room.

Holding the event on the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal allowed inland waterways access for sailing ships and other much larger vessels to attend and celebrate the Pageant.

Celebrating Cotswold Canals Restoration

The Saul Waterways Pageant celebrated the restoration work taking place on the Cotswold Canals, and promoted the forthcoming Heritage Lottery bid the Cotswold Canals Trust is making.

During the pageant, IWA's Waterway Recovery Group (WRG) worked with the Trust, to restore the canal at Bowbridge Locks near Stroud. Members of the public were invited to go along and see ‘WRG in action’. WRG is also holding Canal Camp restoration holidays in other locations on the Cotswold Canals over the summer.
