Checklist for Preparing Risk Assessments

When preparing risk assessments for branch activities, officers may find it helpful to use the following check list for potential risks that may need to be considered:

Public meetings, talks and social events: 

  • Fire and emergency arrangements
  • Access and assistance for those people with poor mobility or eyesight
  • Trips and falls, from steps, cables, carpets, etc
  • Refreshments: burns from hot water and cooking, cuts from knives, etc
  • First aid arrangements, medical conditions of visitors
  • Safety of furniture, electrical and kitchen equipment

Walks and visits to places of interest:

  • Trips and falls on uneven surfaces, steps, slippery surfaces, etc
  • People getting lost, straying into areas with dangers
  • Adverse weather conditions, sunstroke, sunburn, effects of the cold and rain 
  • Adequacy of toilet, medical, refreshment facilities
  • Crossing roads, moving vehicles and trains, cyclists

Boating and Waterside activities: 

  • Slips and falls into water, drowning and hypothermia
  • Injury from exertions on lock gear, gates, climbing on board
  • Burns from engines, heating, fueling, cooking
  • Crushing between boat and bank; fingers trapped in ropes
  • Accidents with boats; effects of collisions and mechanical breakdown
  • Impact from other users: cyclists, anglers, vandals
  • Weil's Disease

Sales Stands and Activities at Events:

  • Putting up stands: sharp edges, collapses, trapped fingers
  • Adverse weather: strong winds, rain, snow(!), sunburn
  • Slippy conditions, water-logging
  • Violence from aggressive visitors, petty thieves
  • Over-loaded cars and trailers; motor accidents on-route

Work Parties:

  • Correct use of tools, machinery and other equipment
  • Slips, trips and falls - uneven ground
  • Adverse weather: stong winds, rain, snow, sunburn
  • Impact on the visiting public; prevention of access to work areas
  • The perils of nature: wasp stings, thorns, eye irritants
  • Deep water, slippy conditions, submerged hazards
  • Adequacy of toilet, medical, refreshment facilities
