Join IWA Manchester Branch at its monthly work parties on the canals in and around Manchester. Each month volunteers get together to improve the local waterways, undertaking everything from vegetation management to litter picking. Any one is welcome to join the group, no experience is needed, just old clothes, sturdy shoes and enthusiasm. Volunteers are also advised to come prepared for the weather and to bring a packed lunch if staying all day. Under-18s are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
As an addition to the usual activities we will be doing some planting around lock 4 on the Ashton Canal. It is expected that this planting will be continued at the March 19th clean-up when we will be dedicating the day to Her Majesty the Queens birthday celebrations.
Below are links to details of the Etihad Metro station which is close to Lock 4 and its locale. Exit the station, cross the footbridge over the canal at Joe Mercer Way, descend the steps to the towpath and walk down to Lock 4.
If you are arriving by car the post code is M11 3FF which is the Tennis Centre on Sports City Way. Turn off Alan Turing Way into Sports City Way, drive past the end of the pedestrianised Joe Mercer Way, drive past the Tennis Centre to the car-park, where an access gate leads on to the canal.
We start at 10am and recommend stout foot-ware and gardening type clothes. Please bring a packed lunch, although Lemon Drizzle cake, freshly baked by my Denise, will be available at brew time. A new, floating, cake tin is being sourced. [Though it might be a used plastic Quality Street container]
