Thursday 16th January – IWA North Staffordshire & South Cheshire Branch and Trent & Mersey Canal Society – Monthly work party on the Cheshire Locks, Trent & Mersey Canal.
We return to Wheelock Bottom Lock (Lock 66) for our first work party of the new decade where we have further painting on the lock gates and mooring bollards to complete, weather permitting. We will meet at 10 a.m. and work through until 3 p.m.
The locks are accessible by car via Cotton Lane from the centre of Wheelock Village, situated on the A534 "old" road between Crewe and Sandbach. We have been fortunate to secure limited parking at Cain 9 Dog Grooming - post code CW11 4RB. Turn into the car park at the end of Cotton Lane and park immediately on the right. The locks can also be reached on foot along the tow path from Wheelock walking south towards Malkins Bank and Hassall Green. Bus route is D & G Service No. 38. However, if you intend to leave your car in the village, do NOT park on the privately owned, camera controlled pay and display car park adjacent to Wheelock Wharf and the Barchetta Restaurant where onerous fines are applicable. There is a small council controlled car park at the junction with Crewe Road and Mill Lane , adjacent to the start of Cotton Lane.
If you are able to stay all day, please bring a packed lunch and drink. Wear warm clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and marked with paint and be sure to wear stout footwear. Have a waterproof in case of rain.
Dave Sproson and myself will be leading the work party and we look forward to welcoming as many of you as are able to attend.
