Details: So its nearly that time again, when we dust off the old grappling hook and search our sheds for those smelly old clothes that get their annual use in good old Brum or thereabouts.
Volunteers who attended in 2011 will remember our site was at Bordersley, south of Birmingham where WRG volunteers cleaned out Garrison Locks (officially Grand Union Territory) and had very rich pickings indeed ... well we are going back next year, as well as various other sites along the BCN at the Ashted Flight, into Typhoo Wharf, and up Camp Hill Locks.
Over the past few years we've found a sword, 16 supermarket trolleys (all linked together) a toilet, a canoe and a kitchen sink! 2009's haul included a bath tub and a lion (a toy one, we hasten to add!). Add to that the many bikes, prams, car tyres and objects that defy all attempts to identify them, and you'll get some idea of what the Birmingham Canal Navigations Cleanup is all about. And what it's about is keeping the less well used bits of the BCN & Black Country Network from getting choked up with rubbish and impassable, and maybe getting the local folks to take a bit of pride in their canals rather than using them as a rubbish tip.
It's being supported by local Inland Waterways Association's local branches, the BCN Society, and other local canal societies, as well as the local Canal & River Trust team who will be providing workboats to take the rubbish away, plus grappling hooks and work gloves for volunteers.
So what hidden 'treasure' will we find this year ...
