Weekend of IWA Clean-Ups in October

Weekend of IWA Clean-Ups in October

14 October 2013

The weekend of 19th and 20th October 2013 is a particularly good weekend for getting involved in cleaning up the canals of England, with three IWA branches holding large scale canal clean-ups.  The clean-ups are located in the South East, the Midlands and the North West, so many IWA members will be within easy distance of one of them (and if you are not, WRG style accommodation is available for one of the events meaning volunteers from anywhere in the country can make a weekend of it).

On Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th October you can join IWA Milton Keynes Branch for their bi-annual event where they will be cleaning up the Grand Union Canal through Milton Keynes.  The work will be starting at Fenny Stratford on Friday lunchtime and will head north to Old Wolverton, finishing up at The Galleon, Bridge 68, around lunchtime on Sunday.  Start times and locations for each day are:  Friday - Fenny Stratford at 11.00 am, Saturday - Woolstone, Bridge 83 at 09.30 am and Sunday - Black Horse, Great Linford at  09.15.  For further details contact David King david.king@waterways.org.uk

On Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th October you can join IWA Manchester Branch at Operation Starburst in Greater Manchester, where work will involve pulling rubbish out of the canal, vegetation clearance and litter picking, with volunteers working in five different locations based on a central meeting point of Portland Basin, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL7 0QA.  For further information or to book contact Alison Smedley, IWA Branch Campaign Officer alison.smedley@waterways.org.uk or phone 07779 090915.

On Sunday 20th October you can join IWA Warwickshire Branch in Warwick.  Work will take place between 10am and 1pm and will include removing rubbish from the canal, litter picking, vegetation clearance and removing graffiti from bridges.  Meet at the Tesco moorings by Emscote Road Bridge (No 46), Warwick.  Contact info.warwickshire@waterways.org.uk

Whichever event you are thinking about joining, volunteers are advised to wear old clothes, stout footwear and bring waterproofs in case of rain.
