Swansea Canal Society Awarded £20,000 Grant04 November 2013
The Swansea Canal Society have been awarded a £20,000 grant by the Water Recreational Challenge Fund for Wales, SPLASH. The grant will be used to encourage greater access to the canal where it runs through Coed Gwilym Park in Clydach, a stretch that was once popular with canoeists, but had become overgrown after a canoe hire centre closed down in the 1990s.
Swansea Canal Society plans to use the grant to start a canoe hire business on the canal in 2014, with all profits going towards the restoration of the canal. Volunteers from the society are currently meeting weekly to prepare the canal north of Coed Gwilym Park, more information about these weekly meetings can be found on the Society’s website.
