‘WOW’ or Canal & River Explorers?

Things are moving fast in the Canal & River Trust World – and included in the changes was the perception by BW senior management that it was also time to change their WOW education branding to something more meaningful for them.

The result is the use of the word “Explorers” which they will link with their new brand “Canal & River”.  Following on from this there will be a brand new “Explorers” website and their material will be similarly branded.

Questions have inevitably arisen about this change in relation to IWA and the WOW partnership, which has run for many years and we would like to reassure members that ‘WOW’ is still alive and well, as far as IWA is concerned.  There has been significant investment in new resources in recent years and IWA has also put out our WOW kits to far more events and societies who have therefore invested in the WOW concept, and promoted it to their visitors.  We will also need to look at a new IWA WOW web page as all our material encourages children to visit us on line.

In the meantime we will continue to share resources/ideas with the BW/C&RT team as appropriate.

If any organisation or event would like to book a WOW kit for 2012, please contact gillian.bolt@waterways.org.uk

IWA Lichfield Branch Helps Regenerate Historic Area of Rugeley

The Waterside Action Team Rugeley (WATR) had additional help on Sunday from the Victory Christian Centre Youth Group. WATR, which is a community group lead by IWA's Lichfield Branch, is gradually improving the Brindley Bank area of Rugeley by the canal aqueduct.

The latest development is a bid for money from the Community Paths Initiative to help improve the public footpath leading from Wolseley Road down to the ‘Bloody Steps’ by the canal. This path will form part of a 2.5 mile circular walk around the canal which will be named ‘the Brindley Trail’ in honour of James Brindley, the chief engineer of the Trent and Mersey Canal.

The young volunteers cleared undergrowth, weeds and litter, while other volunteers worked hard to uncover the old tramway which is by the aqueduct, renovated a bench across the canal, and generally tidied the area up.

thermometermen150pxLast Chance to Donate to the Inglesham Lock Restoration Appeal

The Inglesham Lock Restoration Appeal is due to close to personal donations at the end of April (although we will not be turning away any funds that arrive after this date).

Donations totalling £85,469 have been pledged towards the Inglesham Lock Appeal so far and we hope to get the total higher by the end of April.

Last year, WRG volunteers set up the site compound, cleared vegetation, and started rebuilding the upper wing walls. In 2012, volunteers plan to assist in the construction of a dam to enable access to the lock chamber, as well as repair the stop plank grooves, instal new stop planks and continue the repair of the wing walls.

WRG will be on site from 11th August until 1st September.  Volunteers will also be on site throughout the year with weekend work parties planned in April, May, and June. If you are interested in volunteering this summer to help restore the lock please visit the WRG website for more information.

Please send a cheque made out to 'IWA' to: IWA Inglesham Appeal, Island House, Moor Road, Chesham, HP5 1WA or donate online

See the photo gallery of restoration work undertaken so far.

About People

We are saddened to report the death of David Howarth on 4th April whilst on a visit to New Zealand.  He was part of IWA’s Festival team, with responsibilities for the festival site layout and logistics, for a number of years, and was also a former treasurer of IWA’s Manchester Branch.  Although David's funeral is taking place in New Zealand, there is likely to be a memorial service for him, in the Bolton area, during May.

We are also saddened to report the death of Tony Robinson, chairman of Cotswold Canals Trust on 13th April.   Tony was elected chairman of the Trust in 2011 and the illness that ended his life manifested itself only a few weeks after he took office.  He had remained active until very recently, and had been a great help in advancing IWA's appeal for Inglesham Lock.
