Issue date: 1st March 2013
Volunteers returned to Bridge 9 on the Leek Arm of the Caldon Canal on 14th February to complete hedge laying started in January. The volunteers again came from a number of organisations; IWA Stoke-on-Trent Branch; the Caldon and Uttoxeter Canals Trust (CUCT) and the Churnet Valley Living Landscape Partnership (CVLLP). One volunteer came from as far away as Northamptonshire, wanting to try out his recently acquired hedge laying skills.
In addition to hedge laying, a group spent the day planting hedging plants to fill gaps in the hedge that would not be covered by the hedge laying. Approximately 250 hedging plants were put in and the end results gave a ‘finished’ look to this particular stretch of canal.
The monthly work parties will continue with further vegetation work on Thursday 14th March. All tools and materials are provided, however volunteers need to wear old clothes and stout shoes or boots and bring waterproofs, just in case! All welcome for either the full day (10am – 3pm) or join in for part of the day.
Further work parties along the Caldon Canal will continue through 2013 and from April will alternate between the second Sunday and second Thursday of the month i.e. Sunday 14th April, Thursday 9th May, Sunday 9th June.
