The 10-mile clean-up of the Grand Union Canal through Milton Keynes, carried out on 23rd to 25th March by IWA's Milton Keynes Branch, found somewhat less thrown-in rubbish compared to previous clean-ups. The clean-up in partnership with British Waterways and sponsored by Wyvern Shipping Co Ltd still collected over 10 tons of debris in and by the canal, but it was apparent that MK residents have become more aware of the need to look after their canal.
The volunteer members of IWA MK Branch were joined by other local volunteers as well as the Leighton Buzzard and Linslade Scout Troops. Forty people in total were involved in the operation. IWA members used their boats to tow 70-foot and 40-foot work boats supplied by BW. The volunteers dragged multiple grappling hooks from the work boats as well as loading all the rubbish collected by bankside grapplers and litter collectors.
