Lancaster Canal Cleanup Ahead of Campaign Festival

Issue date: 25th June 2012

IWA North Lancashire and Cumbria Branch along with the Lancaster Canal Trust helped clean-up the southern end of the Lancaster Canal on Sunday 10th June, ahead of the Preston Guild/IWA Campaign Festival to be held 25th - 27th August. The clean-up followed the canal to the Ashton Basin at its terminal of navigation.

There were about 30 volunteers involved in the clean-up including members of the Friends of Haslam Park, the Waterway Recovery Group, the local Scout group, Lancaster Canal Boat Club and many local residents.

Items recovered included component parts of 4 push bikes, a metal gate barrier, an interior sprung mattress and various empty tins and bottles. About 25 bags of other rubbish were gathered up amid compliments from those members of the public who were using the towpath.

Equipment was provided by British Waterways and Preston City Council.

A final clean up before the Festival is planned for Sunday 19th August.  Further information is available on Lancaster Canal Trust's website.
