For some time IWA has argued against Canal & River Trust's proposals for installing paddle pawl stops that would prevent the paddle pawl from being completely moved out of the way whilst a paddle is being wound down, because of the hazards this creates.
Paddle pawl stops are generally either fixed metal bars welded in front of the paddle pawl to prevent its removal, or can be created by the pawl being taken off and repositioned so that it cannot be lifted completely off.
Following the announcement last year that CRT would cease fitting any more stops to paddle pawls in 2015, IWA has been following up with CRT their plans for improving paddle pawl maintenance and design.
In the meantime, IWA would like to know where paddle pawl stops that had been fitted earlier in 2015 still remain in place. When you are out and about please let us know if you come across any other locations which can be added to this list.
22nd November 2016 - Spot the Paddle Pawl Stops
30th June 2016 - Using Paddle Gears Safely
September 2015 - Lock Gate Paddle Pawl Stop Update
15th July 2015 - Paddle Pawl Design Contributes to the Near Sinking of a Narrowboat
15th June 2015 - IWA Issues Statement on Paddle Pawl Stops
Following the request in IWA Bulletin for boaters to report where lock paddle gear on CRT waterways still had paddle pawl stops fitted a number of responses have been received. If you have any updates on the locations below or have any to add, please let us know so that we can use it to remind CRT that we wish to see these paddle pawl stops being removed. Please send details to Alison Smedley, IWA Campaigns Officer.
