British Waterways' Boundary Change

Issue date: 18th January 2012

BW have announced that subject to technical details, the following areas will be transferred from the South Wales & Severn waterway to the West Midlands from April:

  • 1km length of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, incorporating Stourport Basins
  • 4km length of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal from Kings Norton Junction to the south portal of Wast Hill Tunnel at Hopwood Cutting.

The main reasons given for this proposed change are that it will allow better alignment with local authority boundaries. The transfer is also reported to allow better alignment with stakeholders such as volunteer groups, community groups, canal societies and regeneration areas and encourage efficiencies in redeployment of resources and operational bases.
