The Port of London Authority (PLA) has issued a safety bulletin to all recreational boat owners navigating the tidal Thames following an incident where a recreational motor boat lost power when approaching the Thames Barrier. This resulted in the boat being swept into a closed barrier gate. Fortunately, the boat was recovered without injury to the crew or damage to the vessel.
As a result PLA has issued a bulletin to reiterate the importance of boaters taking certain safety precautions when navigating the tidal Thames. PLA recommendeds that all sailing and powered vessels on the tidal Thames should be equipped with a suitable anchor of good working order and a sufficient length of chain. The anchor should be ready to deploy in an emergency. If a boat comes into difficulty on the tidal Thames, the anchor should be deployed when it is safe to do so and taking into account the chart of the area. London Vessel Traffic Services should then be called on VHF Channel 14 or on 020 8855 0315.
