Issue Date: 16 January, 2019

It’s almost that time of year again when Little Venice is transformed by over a hundred colourful boats, live music, refreshment stands, craft stalls and plenty of family fun for the IWA Canalway Cavalcade 2019.

This vibrant festival is one of the biggest events in the nation’s waterways calendar and a firm favourite with visitors. Organised by volunteers from The Inland Waterways Association (IWA), the event takes place over May Day Bank Holiday weekend - 4th to 6th May - at Little Venice in Paddington.

Come and see Browning’s Pool at its very best, full of boats with bunting flying and dressed to our 2019 theme ‘Celebrating Our Volunteers’.  This year, we have a wide diversity of boats already booked in for the event including historic, residential and working narrowboats, cruisers and Dutch barges. There is a packed programme of events both on and off the water including a pageant of decorated boats on Saturday; boat handling competitions and an evening procession of illuminated boats on Sunday and a parade of historic and working boats on Bank Holiday Monday.

Younger visitors can try their hand at kayaking, visit a Teddy Bear’s Picnic or watch a traditional Punch & Judy show in Rembrandt Gardens.

For more details of what’s on, timings, how to get there plus a full listing of food & drink, craft and other stalls, please visit the website: www.waterways.org.uk/cavalcade.

Cavalcade is organised by a core team of dedicated volunteers who meet every 6 – 8 weeks in London to discuss progress and share ideas. The increasing success of the event means we are looking for new, enthusiastic team members to join in the fun of running this colourful spectacle every year.

In particular, we are looking for an Administration Coordinator and also an Assistant Publicity & Social Media Manager, but we would love to hear from anyone who would like to help out, we never turn a willing volunteer away! You don’t need previous experience, you just need a few hours of your time every month - and three days in May.  If you would like to join the team, or for more information, please contact:  Mark Saxon, Chairman - mark.saxon@waterways.org.uk

Volunteers are also needed to assist during the three days of the event so, if you think you can spare a few hours between 4th and 6th May, please go to the IWA website where the volunteer registration form can be downloaded or completed on-line here.

There are still a few vacancies for volunteers in the work camp too, but you should be prepared to work for a minimum of 2 days. Food and refreshments will be available for a small fee and limited overnight accommodation can be provided by arrangement. Please contact our Work Camp Leader, Pete Fleming, for more information: pete.fleming@team.waterways.org.uk
