PRESS RELEASE: Tiller Pin Trophy Handover to Northampton

Issue date: 18th November 2014

Councillor David Mackintosh, Leader of Northampton Borough Council, will be at a public meeting at the Nene Whitewater Centre this Friday to receive the ‘Tiller Pin Trophy’, at a special ceremony to mark Northampton’s hosting of The Inland Waterways Association’s (IWA) Festival of Water on the River Nene over the August Bank Holiday Weekend next summer. The trophy will remain with Northampton until handed over to the town hosting the next event.

The Festival is being organised by a small army of volunteers gathered from IWA members, waterways enthusiasts and the local community, and this Friday’s meeting, 7.30pm at the Whitewater Centre, is open to all interested Northampton residents and organisations who would like to learn more about what is planned.

Stoke Bruerne based waterways author, historian and IWA Vice President, David Blagrove MBE, and President of the event, said: “I’m very excited to be involved with the Festival on my home waters, the main aim of which is to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the opening of the Northampton Arm in 1815, connecting the Grand Union Canal (or Grand Junction as it was then known) to the River Nene in Northampton. The waterways flowing through Northamptonshire are a wonderful asset and we would like as many people as possible to get involved in this celebration of the contribution they have made over the last two centuries as an important part of our national heritage.

The three day festival, which is expected to attract over 200 boats and will feature a wide range of water based activities, high quality entertainment and stalls with plenty to keep everyone amused, will have no admission charge although visitors will be encouraged to make a donation.

More information is available on IWA's website.
